PSYCHO-SOCIAL COUNSELLING-COURSE INFORMATION
A. WHAT IS PSYCHOSOCIAL COUNSELLING COURSE?
It is a course that equips participants with knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for them to work as counsellors and to provide counselling services in a variety of settings and situations to people who are troubled by various issues of life.
B. WHERE CAN COUNSELLORS WORK?
Counsellors are usually employed by organisations that provide some form of counselling services such as Health education, Peer education, Victim support, HIV Counselling and Testing, Male circumcision counselling, Guidance and counselling, Crisis management, Spiritual counselling, Reproductive health education and counselling, Grief counselling, Financial counselling, Nutrition counselling, Maternal and child health counselling etc. These organisations include:
Various commercial banks
Zambia Police Victim Support Unit (VSU)
The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC)
Zambia Correction Service (ZCS)
Local councils – Public health departments
NGOs like CIDRZ, CHAZ, ZAMBART, JIEPHIGO, DAPP, Equip Zambia, JSI, Expanded Church Response, Dreams, AIDS HealthCare Foundation (AHF), The University of Maryland, Society for Family Health (SFH), Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Planned Parenthood Association of Zambia (PPAZ)etc.

C. WHO QUALIFIES TO DO THE PSYCHO-SOCIAL COUNSELLING COURSE?
Grade 12 certificate holders/ O’Level certificate
Grade 9 certificate holders/junior school certificate
Mature people with work experience who may not have qualifications but are able to read and write in the English language.
For the online programmes one must have a smartphone or a computer with access to good internet

E. WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF STUDYING THE COURSE?
It is a recognised qualification in counselling
The certificate is credible as it is issued by the Ministry of Health (MOH) of the Republic of Zambia and the joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS)
Qualifies participants to be affiliated and licensed by the Zambia Counselling Council (ZCC)
Makes participants employable in GRZ hospitals, clinics and other reputable organisations
It also involves practical (attachments) at GRZ clinics or hospitals
It is very affordable, which can also be paid in instalments
There is also an alternative payment plan for those with financial challenges
The course duration is short – only three months (Two weeks theory and two months attachment)
One can attend either day or evening classes
The course has been given a go ahead by the District Health Director (DHD).
